Announces “Summer Scholars” Enrichment Program
St. John Neumann Regional Academy is once again offering their “Summer Scholars” Enrichment Program. The program will be held at the Sheridan Street campus of St. John Neumann Regional Academy, 1650 Sheridan St., Williamsport.
The program will run July 7 through August 1 from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm each weekday. Each week will feature special themed activities, as well as field trips. In addition to a special focus on the weekly theme, daily activities include an academic review of basic skills, religion, picnics, trips to a nearby park and outdoor water play. A daily snack and drink is included. Children entering grades PreK3 through Grade 6 in the fall are welcome to attend. Children will be divided into two groups based on age.
The weekly themes for Grades PreK3-1st grade are: Week 1 (July 7 -11): Summer Safari. Our adventure begins with an exciting summer safari. The children will learn about various safari animals, such as baboons, lions, lemurs, elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, tigers, and hyenas.
Week 2 (July 14 -18): Going My Way. Week 2 features an interesting review of different types of transportation. We will construct various vehicles and take a ride on a River Valley Transit bus.
Week 3 (July 21-25): A+ Health. We will learn more about ourselves and our bodies, and how to stay healthy as we get an "A+ in Health". We will be talking to and visiting with many health care professionals.
Week 4 (July 28- August 1): Sweet Tooth. We will do some sweet cooking during our "Sweet Tooth" week. After a field trip to Purity Candy to watch the candy-making process, the children will practice their measuring and counting skills while cooking and making some sweet treats of their own.
The weekly themes for Grades 2-6 are:
Week 1 (July 7 -11): Patriotic Week. We will be studying the history and symbols of our country and learning about patriotism. We will have a guest speaker and will have a picnic lunch at the site of the Penn College flag.
Week 2 (July 14 -18): Environmental Week. We will be investigating our environment and how to best care for it. We will study tree identification, endangered species, natural resources, etc. A special field trip to the Montour Preserve will highlight the week.
Week 3 (July 21-25): Oceans. We will be learning about the geography of the oceans and ocean life, and we will learn about the people who study oceans. We will journey to Little Pine State Park and visit their man-made beach.
Week 4 (July 28- August 1): Sports Week. We will be exploring the history of sports, researching sports figures and participating in a variety of sporting activities at a nearby park.
